Maintenance at SRO -"Working at it" While the Sun Shines
Calling All Members…
The health of our observatory depends upon care and feeding, just like any structure exposed to increasing age or the elements. And one that sits at elevation sees comparatively harsher conditions. For all these reasons, the old adage seems fitting: “Many hands make for lighter work.”
Some of the best times to be found at SRO aren’t limited to peering through the eyepiece of the telescope or performing science. There’s nothing like standing shoulder to shoulder with like-minded people and getting to know them beyond the shared commitment to reverent and necessary preservation.
In the history of SRO, there have been a handful of members that have demonstrated a servant’s attitude through their extraordinary volunteerism. But current members and those wishing to join must understand that the upkeep of our precious facility is a responsibility that must be borne by everyone.

Rocky Road
One of the biggest challenges in getting to SRO begins once you leave the pavement. There can be deep snows in winter and, when that runs off in the spring, the unimproved road back to the site develops ruts like the one seen here. These are also prevalent following torrential rains.
A four-wheel drive or high-clearance vehicle is recommended and is sometimes required. It’s also a good idea to carry pails of largish rocks to fill in as needed. Beyond that, members have organized impromptu “civil engineering” work details to fill the ruts but these are temporary fixes lasting only as long as the latest dry spell.
